THE WHISPERING MANGO | Akbar & Birbal | HELLO CHUNMUN
3. THE WHISPERING MANGO
One summer afternoon, Emperor
Akbar sat beneath the palace mango tree, savoring its shade and sweetness. A
breeze stirred the leaves, and he turned to Birbal.

“Tell me, Birbal,” Akbar said,
“if this mango could speak, what would it say about my empire?”
Birbal smiled, plucked a ripe
mango, and held it close to his ear. “It whispers, Jahapanah, that your empire
is vast like its branches, generous like its fruit, and sometimes...
misunderstood like its seed.”

Akbar raised an eyebrow. “Misunderstood?”
“Yes,” Birbal said, slicing the
mango and revealing the stone. “The seed is hard, hidden, and often discarded.
But without it, there would be no tree.”
Akbar leaned back, thoughtful.
“So you mean even the difficult parts of my rule have purpose?”
“Exactly,” Birbal said. “Justice,
discipline, even silence—they are seeds. Not sweet, but necessary.”
Akbar nodded, then tossed the
mango seed into the soil. “Let it grow, Birbal. Let it remind us that sweetness
begins with something tough.”

Birbal bowed. “And may your
empire always bear fruit, Maharaj.”
